Sony would have you believe that the future is here, and it is really tiny.
By adding heart rate sensing, water resistance and physical notifications, all without sacrificing design Sony aims to refresh its fitness wearables range with the latest Smartband model. Unfortunately, inconsistent performance at almost every level has made such lofty goals unobtainable.
It is comfortable for someone who does not wear a watch, its silicone band is soon forgotten as it holds the main device tight to your wrist. It’s pleasing to the eye, and it’s smooth, coloured featureless strap is passable for a fashion accessory.
The comfort factor is important as the device is designed to be worn 24/7, the main reason being to monitor your background activity such as sleeping levels.
Robustness is an equally impressive factor of the Smartband 2, it can even survive rugby and swimming training. Sony have certified the device waterproof up to IP68 standard which means it can be used in fresh water up to three meters for 30 minutes. It is good for casual use in chlorinated pools as long as it is rinsed afterwards.
So for comfort, durability and passive monitoring, the Smartband 2 earns a thumbs up. For a mid-price gadget expect to pay around €140 which is not bad.
