Sengled have come up with the ingenious idea of adding a security camera to an ordinary floodlight and as thieves’ hate standing in a spotlight a floodlight is a split deterrent. Its way more than a lightbulb as it doubles as a security system, with motion sensor, wireless camera, facial recognition software and microphone.
Snap also detects motion which is an integral part of surveillance as you cannot monitor 24/7. The motion detection feature is now even smarter with the ability to set up to three detection zones for each snap. Essentially these motion detection zones are virtual squares that you draw around areas you want to monitor and all other movements outside these areas will be ignored. As Snap will most likely be deployed outside this feature is helpful in trying to reduce false alarms.
Snap also has a two-way voice feature which acts as a walkie talkie so you can monitor surrounding sounds and communicate with the person standing near your light.
The Snap app can be used with iOS and Android and will be the main interface for control of your Snap devices. Once you have created an account you can start pairing your Snaps and other Sengled bulbs. Once paired you can switch your snaps on and off, customize settings, create schedules, enable two-way voice and set motion detection zones.
Sengled offer 7 and 30-day cloud video storage plans and do not offer any local storage options. Additionally, you can’t use the motion sensor option unless you subscribe to either the 7 or 30 day plans. According to Sengled, the reason for this is due to the algorithm used to make the motion sensor work being so complex it had to be hosted on their servers and therefore the need to subscribe.
As Snap’s camera is completely wireless, it relies on the floodlight feature for power and on its dual band Wi-Fi for internet connectivity. Installation is straight forward and requires only that you screw the Snap into the fixture like you would any ordinary floodlight. Then download the app, configure your settings after subscribing and that is it.
Snap is also dust and waterproof (with an IP54 rating), so you only need to unscrew it and give it a quick rinse when it needs a clean.
So what is Snap then? Snap is a floodlight with a built in security camera and 1080p video and wide angle view. It includes clever features such as motion detection, remote app control and two-way voice.
