WhatsApp have updated their status feature to now include ‘multimedia’ statuses. You could always add a simple line of text, but now you can add pictures and doodles too. Currently, some of the new status features are only available on iPhones.
The update came at the end of February as a celebration of WhatsApp’s eighth birthday. Much like Snapchat, these statuses act like short-lived stories and disappear after 24 hours. These statuses will be encrypted end-to-end, giving them the same security as the messages you send.
This is a quick overview of how to update your status:
Step 1: Tap the ‘status’ button at the bottom of the app screen, then click the circular ‘add status’ symbol. You may see an introductory slideshow from the creators letting you know about the changes.
Step 2: Then you can select the type of media you want to display. You can take a photo or video just like on Facebook, or some other photo apps, by holding the shutter button to record or tap once for a photo. Tap the Camera icon in the bottom-right corner to toggle between front and rear cameras. Swipe along the strip at the bottom of the screen to use an existing picture/video. You can also search for GIFs by tapping the GIF button on the bottom-left.
Step 3: Personalise your pictures! (If you can’t see these features you may need to update your iPhone.) You can add emojis or text by selecting the icons at the top of the screen. You can draw freehand too by tapping the pencil. There are other tools too, letting you crop and spin your picture if you want to.
Step 4: Click send (bottom-right) when you’re ready. This will share the status with all your contacts, but you can change this to only notify certain people if you want to.
The removal of the text-only update wasn’t 100% popular, it seems – some users were unhappy with the removal of the static ‘About’ section of their profile, so it may make a return!
