Spring 2017 is set to be a pretty good season for new or returning UK television shows! Even with all the distractions of living in or visiting Spain, sometimes we all miss the UK TV we know and love. Here’s our pick of the one’s we’re most excited about seeing.
Little Boy Blue, ITV, May 1st
This will likely be a tough watch, but a must-see for true crime fans.
Merseyside was rocked in 2007 when 11-year-old Rhys Jones was murdered on the infamous Croxteth Park Estate in Liverpool. This sensitive, carefully researched dramatization was made with the support of Rhys’ family, and explores the circumstances surrounding the crime itself, and the later conviction of his 16-year-old killer.
Doctor Who, BBC1, April 15th
It’s the 10th season (since the reboot!) of this family favourite, and it’s all-change – it will be Peter Capaldi’s last season as the Doctor, and we’ll see the introduction of a new companion, Bill. The teaser trailers show us glimpses of Daleks, Cybermen, and the return of Matt Lucas as recurring character Nardole.
Fargo, Channel 4, Date TBC
The absorbing, black comedy-drama is back for a third season this spring with a new storyline. Ewan McGregor is playing two lead roles this time – twins who have enjoyed very different level of success in their lives. Fans of the previous seasons will have noticed the links between the stories, and apparently this season will be no different, so watch carefully!
Fargo premieres on American channel FX in April, with a UK release date to be scheduled for later in the Spring.
Fearless, ITV, date TBC
The exact date is still to be confirmed for ITV’s new conspiracy thriller, which is set in an alternate, fearful, post-9/11 world where the police are given extraordinary powers.
Helen McRory plays the led character as a solicitor defending a man who has been ‘wrongfully accused’ of murder, with turns from Michael Gambon and John Bishop too. The show was written by Patrick Harbinson, whose writing credits include Homeland and 24, so it’s certain to be tense and intelligent.
