Many WhatsApp users are seeing a too-good-to-be-true voucher appear in their inbox that promises a £250 voucher for a supermarket like Asda,Tesco, or M&S. The message is designed to look like it comes from a trusted contact, however the message is a fake.
It is a ‘phishing’ scam – the link that you must click to ‘redeem the voucher’ goes to an unofficial website that asks you for your personal information. That information is collected and used by scammers.
If you see the message on your phone, don’t panic:
- Avoid clicking the link
- Do not reply if you don’t know the contact who sent the message and link
- Never fill in any personal information
- Never forward the message
- Delete the message
- If it came from a contact you know, tell them that it’s a scam in case they’ve forwarded it or clicked the link themselves
