From slime tutorials to fun singalongs (baby shark doo doo doo..!) YouTube is a great resource for entertaining and teaching kids of all ages. However the point of YouTube is that anyone can upload videos, and this can cause a nightmare when it comes to parental controls. That’s why they launched ‘YouTube Kids’ a few years ago.
What is YouTube Kids?
It’s a separate YouTube app that has stronger content filters to block anything inappropriate from being watched by young children. As a parent or guardian you can set time-limits, check the viewing history and set limits on what they can search.
Some parents have reported that, on occasion, videos that are definitely not suitable for children have slipped through the controls. In response, YouTube are making some changes.
What’s Being Updated?
The biggest change is the ability to stop your children from using the ‘search’ feature to find new videos. Parents can instead choose to build playlists of approved content for their children to access and ensure that they’re only viewing that chosen material. If building playlists sounds like a lot of work, there are ready-made playlists and channels you can approve by creators like PBS and Sesame Street. Parents can now also tell the app that their children fall into the ‘older children’ category and therefore can see content related to games, music, etc.
If you have children, YouTube Kids is a great way to let them explore the great content on the internet in a safe way. If you’re fed up of sharing your smartphone with your kids, it’s a great idea to invest in a family-friendly tablet to watch videos both at home and on-the-go. We highly recommend the 10″ Lenovo tablet – the large screen makes it perfect for watching videos. If you’re in Spain, contact Telitec today to find out more.
