This a bit of an emotive subject for me having been a lifelong Veggie. However, having done a bit of research in a more clinical way I have come to a few conclusions. You can eat a steak or an avocado and equally damage the environment.
It all boils down to 3 main things.
- Shop local and by this I don’t mean pop down to the local supermarket to buy an avocado that has been flown in from Kenya that transport alone ups your Carbon footprint or a piece of meat that was fed soya grown at the cost of the amazon rain forest. Buy produce from any shop but check where it comes from and what it contains.
2. Plan your meals to prevent waste and if you have food waste create a compost for your garden or plant pots. Its also saves fuel to think ahead.
3. Lastly bring your shopping bags or buy paper bags if needed.
I really tried to end this chapter on the above but just had to include the following link and affects you could have by just taking one- or two-days abstinence of meat and dairy. Take a look its pretty mind blowing.
