While we’re conscious of the need for home security, how often do we think about our home network security?
Nowadays we have many devices connected to the home Wi-Fi – our mobiles, televisions, computers, and smart home devices such as alarms, plugs, Amazon Alexa and Echo to name a few.
Connecting Gadgets
With so many gadgets connecting to the home Wi-Fi, it’s super important to make sure your security is as strong as it can be.
This will prevent cybercriminals and hackers from getting access to your home Wi-Fi network and, therefore, any personal data, such as passwords or bank account details, that can be found on your phone or computer.
The good news is you don’t need to be tech-savvy to strengthen your home network security and keep your online information safe.
Passwords
Telitec pre-configure the routers for you, proving you with your own WiFi code.
If you purchase your own router, and your password is the manufacturer’s name or simply ‘admin’, then you need to change it.
It is advisable to change your Wi-Fi password every 30 to 90 days, especially if you regularly give out the password.
This stops it from being passed on to a third party to use.
Routers
Keep your router’s firmware up to date as this will fix any bugs, improve performance, and give you the latest security features.
Often the firmware is updated automatically, if a Telitec Router then contact our technical team.
If it is your own router and it does not automatically update, you’ll need to download the latest firmware from your router manufacturer’s website to update it.

Turn off your Wi-Fi network when you’re away from home for a weekend or longer. If you’re not using the Wi-Fi, why not switch it off so no one else can potentially log in while you’re away?
Antivirus
Get a good firewall or check your antivirus software comes with firewall protection as it is usually included. A firewall is another layer of protection against cyber-attacks or malicious software accessing your computer.

VPN

Guests
If you regularly have guests or rent out your property, you can set up a guest Wi-Fi network to give people access to the internet only and not your files.
Open any web browser and typing in your IP address which you’ll find on the router. Find guest network settings under wireless settings or a special guest network section.
