Let´s talk about rehab, because it might have a broader meaning than you´d think.
According to www.vocabulary.com , the word rehab comes from Latin: Re-, meaning ´again´ and habitare, ´to make fit´.
This definition leaves a wide scope of rehab alternatives but I specialize and my expertise is in probably the most known and used version of the word, where a person needs a program of treatments to get (physically) fit again.
As a Physiotherapist, and Osteopath in training, this is my daily job. I help people to get better through rehab. I´d like to define (medical) rehab as: a series of treatments, including exercises, to help one get better again after an injury, accident, or surgery or with a congenital or acquired disease or condition. This includes conditions of orthopedic, neurologic, cardiac and pulmonary origin.
Rehab is not just for the unfortunates who have suffered severe accidents and injuries, or people recovering from a surgery though. Someone who has a well-known injury, such as a Tennis elbow, or Golfers elbow also needs rehab. The ideal treatment shouldn´t just be a therapist working at it, either manually or by means of some appliances which can be used, exercises need to be done as well. And that usually includes homework too….!
The secret to rapid and successful recovery is rehab; after the diagnose is made by the therapist, the manual and/or non-manual techniques have been applied, exercises should be done, together with the therapist at first, to get to a satisfactory result. And, in order to speed things up and (once fully recovered) stay healthy, some exercises need to be repeated, on a weekly basis, at home. So this is really where you are involved in the healing process as well. But it will pay off, and help you to reduce the costs of visits to see your osteopath or physio.
A great example of preventive rehab is the importance of balance. It is well documented that a large percentage of accidents would not occur if our balance was better. This is easily improved by strengthening our core with a series of exercises over a relatively small period of time. This has proved hugely popular among my clients with great results.
In calm surrounding we will discuss what you would like to improve, whether it’s the movement in shoulder, improving the strength in your back, improving your balance or agility, I know we can achieve this together.
