If you live or spend time in Spain, life is going to be easier if you know a bit of Spanish! Signing up for lessons isn’t always immediately possible due to the schedule, cost, or date that the courses start. Here are some completely free ways that you can brush up on your español, using only your mobile phone.
App – Duolingo
Duolingo can be accessed on your mobile through their app, or at your computer through the website. And it’s completely free (although you may have to put up with a few ads.)
The best thing about Duolingo is the variety of ways the app engages you to improve your language skills. There are mini-games and activities to keep learning interesting and fun, plus the lessons are ‘bite sized’ so you can fit them into even the busiest day.
Podcast – Coffee Break Spanish
This podcast is designed to teach you basic vocabulary in short bursts. With phrases to repeat and pronunciation tips, it’s like being in a classroom but with more freedom.
‘Coffee Break Spanish’, or any language podcast, is especially great for the times you’d usually use music to keep yourself company. For example, you can pop it on while commuting, cleaning, or exercising, and the episodes last around 25-30 minutes each. It’s also been going for a few seasons now so you don’t have to wait for new episodes either. The podcasts are free to download, but if you like the product then you can pay to get access to their online learning tools too.
App – Google Translate
A translation app may sound like a cheat, but knowing that you have a little help in the palm of your hand might be the push you need to strike up a conversation. It can also help you to learn new words – if you hear or read something you don’t recognise, it makes sense to find out what it means ASAP and add it to your vocabulary!
There are a LOT of translation apps out there – some paid for, some free. However Google Translate does have some advantages over the competition:
- Tech that’s always increasing the accuracy of the translations, including machine-learning and manual corrections to dodgy translations
- Free download
- Translate text by pointing your phone camera at it for a quick translation – e.g. at a menu or road sign
- Voice translation for many languages, to help you communicate in the moment
- You can also get offline support for some languages, including Spanish (though this will take up some phone memory!)
Just remember to never use a translation app for the really important stuff. If it’s anything legal, medical, or a business deal, then a human translator is much better and will avoid any misunderstandings.
