It happens to everyone at some point…one minute your phone’s in your pocket and the next it’s in a sink, puddle, or (if you’re really unlucky) in the toilet! Unfortunately sometimes your phone will be immediately damaged by the water and there will be nothing you can do, however some quick thinking might save your device.
Act quickly – first steps
It’s obvious, but vital – you need to act as quickly as possible to draw the water out of your phone and limit the damage:
- If your phone is still on, turn it off as soon as possible
- Dab (don’t rub) any surface water with soft cloth or paper towels to absorb the maximum water
- Carefully take the phone apart if possible once you’ve switched it off (iPhone users won’t be able to do this) to dry the inner phone more effectively
- Remove and dry your sim card
Vacuum your phone
If there are large droplets inside your phone, you could try vacuuming it gently to draw them out. Leave some space between the nozzle and your phone and gently move it over your phone, not forgetting charger connections and microphones/speakers.
The ‘Rice Trick’
This strange tip does sometimes seem to work – seal your phone, taken apart if possible, in a ziplock bag or a tub filled with dry, uncooked rice for a day or two. The rice will help to draw the water out of the phone. Don’t be tempted to try and turn it on while it’s drying!
Things NOT to do:
Any of these might make the damage to your phone worse:
- Banging it to dislodge droplets
- Using heat or blowing into the phone (so hairdryers are a very, very bad idea!) as this may drive water further into the phone or create steam inside it, causing further damage
- Trying to turn it back on too quickly – wait until it’s had a chance to dry
