You might have heard the common advice that looking at screens in the hour or so before bed can lead to difficulty falling asleep. This is because certain colours of light glowing off of your screen fool your brain into thinking it’s daytime. Your body isn’t as willing to fall into a proper, deep sleep if it thinks it’s daylight outside – you’ll either sleep lightly, or not be able to sleep at all.
The obvious advice is to avoid all electronic screens in the late evening. However many of us like to watch TV, read books on tablets, or chat to loved ones on social media at night. Avoiding screens could leave us feeling quite bored!
Blue Light = Daylight
The good news is that, as with most things, there are apps to solve the issues. The main culprit that disrupts sleep is the blue light on the spectrum. If you remove the worst of the blue light, then you get less eye strain, and also stop fooling your body into thinking it’s daylight. You might sleep a little better and still be able to use your devices right up til bedtime.
There are a LOT of apps to try out. All you have to do is search for something like ‘blue light sleep filter’ on your smart phone’s app store. Here are some of the best rated apps for your Android phone:
- Blue Light Filter (by Leap Fitness Group)
- Bluelight Filter – Night Mode (by Geek.Lab.15)
- Twilight (by Urbandroid)
- NIght Screen (by Arrows)
There are also very similar options for your iPhone too – just search your app store.
